This review is going to be long and contain spoilers for this book as well as previous books in the series...you've been warned.I have been struggling with this series, and this book might be the one that makes me not continue to read them. It was almost the end when in the previous book the author chose to have Pixie/Banshee turn out to be Tek's long lost, kidnapped sister. That little tidbit in the 3rd book made the public sex in the 1st book between Pixie and Sharp in the middle of the brothers (which Tek was there) go from hot to ick really quick. But, back to THIS book. The author tells a really good story, but so many things in this book bothered me for what I saw as inconsistencies:1) the public sex claiming. I enjoy well done exhibitionism, especially the way this author has been doing it (around other like minded individuals, no chance of children seeing it). The other books scenes were pretty well done (until the above mentioned issue) and felt like they fit with the flow of the story. This one seemed to be going in a different direction. Through discussions and actions, Avery realized that it wasn't the public sex that was the claiming, it was the public acknowledgement of "Dark Sons for Life" in front of the brothers that was the true claiming, the true "ritual" that needed to be observed. Then in the next sentence, as they're waiting for a possible enemy/possible friend to meet them (there are 20 armed brothers who don't know if the person they're meeting is coming to give them needed info or is coming to try to kill them), Avery suddenly needs him to have sex with her in front of the brothers before the person gets there...and they do. It took me out of the story because it seemed unnecessary and gratuitous given what Avery had just been thinking and given where they were at in the storyline.2) I like a good "Alpha (H)ero meets strong, independent (h)eroine" story. But, for me at least, it only works when the H gives just as much respect to the h as he is REQUIRING she give to him. This doesn't happen in this book until the end when basically he's been tortured and has no choice but to trust her to know what the heck she is doing. For me, this book would have been so much better if Max had given Avery the level of respect he would have given to a man that had survived what Avery had lived through. But because she is missing an appendage between her legs, all of a sudden the DEA agent that's been undercover for years, survived kidnapping and beatings, as well as multiple attempts on her life, now needs to let the men figure out how to save her and if she tries to have a say in it, she is disrespecting him and his club 🤔3) the strength of the brotherhood is a HUGE theme throughout this book. The fact that Max has all of these people behind him; that would die and kill for him while Avery has been abandoned by everyone she ever trusted is used as a huge draw for Avery to accept the brotherhood. The fact that when Max claims her, she becomes a part of that and will now have this huge brotherhood behind her against the people who framed her and want her dead, could have been a moment of ultimate trust..only to be ruined when in fact that's not the case. There is literally a line where Avery says the bad guy could come up, stick a gun in her face and threaten her and Max can't do anything to the bad guy? To which Hawk replies yes, that's the way it has to be. How is that having her back? To me, that's the exact opposite of what this entire series, what pretty much every MC book I have read, has hammered into us. It was kind of like "yes, we have your back! We'll protect you no matter what!"...."Oh wait, but not from him because of this, this, and this. So sorry, you guys should really run now so the bad guy doesn't get you." Seriously?This book left me feeling frustrated, disappointed in the brotherhood, and like I had whiplash from the inconsistencies I saw within the message of the story. It is going to go in my "won't read again" pile, unfortunately.
